Undoubtedly if there was a Smiths t-shirt in the 80s it was the one with the Vietnam soldier on the cover of The Smiths second album “Meat is murder”, a very heterogeneous album that bridges their first indie stage with “This charming Man”, “What difference does it make? “etc. and their second stage with “Panic”, “Ask” and the album “The Queen is Dead” where they change the influences of 60s pop for touches of 50s rock like “Rusholme Ruffians” or “Nowhere Fast” and later “Ask”, more elaborate orchestral songs like “There is a light that never goes out” which foreshadows Morrissey’s solo period and in general a touch of pop openness quite marked compared to their beginnings. That is why this album is not usually preferred by their fans who prefer their early stage or their period since 1986. In spite of everything, of course, it is full of magnificent songs, with only the last two tracks “Barbarism begins at home” and “Meat is murder” lowering the bar a little.
