In 1990, The Chills toured extensively in support of “Submarine Bells,” both in New Zealand and internationally. They played a number of high-profile shows and festivals, including the Big Day Out festival in Australia and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.

However, despite their success, the band was also facing internal and external pressures. Martin Phillipps, the band’s frontman and primary songwriter, was struggling with addiction and personal issues, which had an impact on the band’s dynamics and productivity. The Chills’ bassist, Justin Harwood, also left the band in 1990 to pursue other musical projects.

Despite these challenges, The Chills continued to be a major force in the New Zealand music scene in 1990 and beyond. Their influence can still be felt in the indie rock and pop music of today, and their legacy as one of New Zealand’s most beloved and influential bands remains secure.
